The territory of the Regional Natural Park Catalan Pyrenees

The Regional Natural Park of the Catalan Pyrenees covers 138,000 hectares in the territory of the Cerdanya, Capcir and Haut Conflent in the department of Pyrenees-Orientales. It encompases 64 municipalities, home to some 21,000 inhabitants, and seven nature reserves. Crossed from side to side by the yellow train, which has run since 1910 the 62 km between Villefranche-de-Conflent and Latour-de-Carol, Park is also home to nine resorts and 2 spas.

What is a Regional Park?

The Decree of 1 September 1994 defines the life of a Regional Park as''a territory delicately balanced, with a natural and rich cultural heritage threatened, subject to a development project based on the preservation and enhancement of this heritage.'' The creation of regional nature parks is part of the Regional Government. Its creation is based on voluntary wishes expressed by municipalities and then relayed by the Region to classification by the State which gives the national brand. These different steps in the procedure clearly demonstrate the need for intervention at each level.

In France, since 1967, there are rural areas with natural and cultural heritage that have some form of protection against the risk of desertification, degradation, etc.. Local governments commit themselves to work along side the state in a contract policy that combines protection of heritage and local development. The area is classified Regional Park by decree and was awarded the brand Regional Park by the Ministry of the Environment: the trademark is intended to promote an image of quality related to efforts to protect and enhance the Heritage conducted on the territory. The classification of a Regional Park is challenged every ten years.
