In 1947, Professor Félix Trombe, decided to move to Mont-Louis, in 1949 he constructed the world’s first solar furnace, thereby undermining the scientific community. The town of Mont-Louis, built by Vauban was consequently dedicated in honour of "The Sun King".

Solar Furnace Mont-Louis

When visiting Mont-Louis’ Solar Furnace, your guide will take you to the heart of its’ construction to explain how it works. This includes an interesting practical demonstration, showing the applications of concentrating the sun’s energy between 2000°C and 3500°C, for example, instant combustion of wood, welding of metal, baking of ceramics...

The visit ends with a summary of technologies using solar energy: thermal solar cells, solar showers, solar batteries, solar ovens...

There is a Gift Shop selling ceramics and bronze articles (made at the Mont Louis Solar Oven) as well as various solar energy items, and a wide range of educational games, books and videos.

The largest solar furnace in the world, with its field of 63 mirrors and unique architecture, but also men and women who will share their passion await you for a fabulous trip! You will discover through the exhibition Le Soleil tame the mysteries of the Temple of the Sun. Visit fun to learn all about the great potential of solar energy and sometimes unexpected applications.

Visits from September to June: 10am to 12.30pm and 14pm to 18pm. July and August: 9:30 am to 19h. Caution! Ticket office closes one hour before the closure.
